Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We first returned to his spelling workbook. The student completed several pages of lesson 12 and a review of lessons 7-11, which were centered on vowel and consonant sounds and consonant blends. Initially, he was having trouble recalling the definitions of "consonant" and "consonant blends," but after going over key portions of the preceding lessons and talking them through, he was ready to do the exercises. I then had us move on to something else. I proceeded to give him another 100 piece puzzle, per his request. This one has a sea lion and a penguin, and he was quite disappointed when I told him we couldn't work on it together right then--he'd have to do it by himself. Overall, he was glad to get the puzzle and was very pleased when I reminded him what a great job he'd done, by himself, on the tiger puzzle. So, we used the remaining time to read two chapters in the A-Z mystery book. That always cheers him. Again, this session, he read fairly well and often attempted to sound out unfamiliar words rather than say some unrelated substitute."
"For this session, we read a small book about Christopher Columbus, continued to learn about personal economics, and read a Pueblo Indian folk tale. The student's homework was to continue the story he was reading."
"Practiced phonics: short vowel, consonant, and ending blends. Practiced reading fiction for comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. Student did spelling worksheet and we reviewed spelling words."
