Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In yesterday's session, we reviewed commonly tested punctuation rules (commas and apostrophes). The student completed several exercises from an English and Reading prep workbook to practice applying the rules. She completed one passage from the ACT English section. We discussed every answer. In addition, the student completed one Reading Practice Set (Prose Fiction). We discussed the answers together. I assigned a writing prompt (30 minute essay) for homework. During the following sessions, we will focus more closely on the Reading passages. Those sections are more challenging for the student. Also, we will work on timing sections. Overall, the student did a very good job with all of the exercises I had prepared! We will continue working on the more challenging Reading passages."
"The student and I went over the areas he felt weakest in, such as reading and English. We also did some math just to make sure he knew how to begin each problem."
"Today, the student and I covered the ACT math section. I had her do the last 40 questions of the math section in 40 minutes. She told me that she struggled a bit with pacing and was racing to do the last 15 or so questions in the last ten minutes of time. Hopefully, that is an issue that can be lessened during the actual test because the first twenty questions should take fewer than twenty minutes, leaving her more than a minute per question on the more difficult half. She was able to complete plug-and-chug questions accurately. We talked about each question in detail, emphasizing the strategy of Putting Down What You Know so you can visually see what information you have vs. what you need, which can help break down a problem into steps. We also discussed figuring out what the question is testing your understanding of. I also went over trig functions and special triangles again with her. I asked her to look over her last couple math tests before we discuss math again next Monday, focusing more on what strategies she used to find answers than on the wrought mathematics itself. At the end, we went over handouts I brought over common ACT English questions and comma usage, which I hope she looks over consistently and thoroughly before her test date."
