Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"She had concerns about her new Algebra topic, so we took a break from SAT to address it. She is learning periodic functions, such as sin x and cos x. I broke down the terminology with her and we went over the stretching, shrinking, and reflection rules. She seemed to understand it."
"The student and I worked on problems from an AP practice exam. We practiced finding max/min and using the first fundamental theorem of calculus. Then, we practiced finding the area between two curves and finding the volume of rotating a region around the line y=-1."
"Awesome job today! We reviewed elimination primarily, and then did a practice quiz for his test on Friday. He has definitely showed signs of improvement just from the last few sessions! I will see him again on Thursday."
"We reviewed the intermediate value and mean value theorems, properties of first and second derivatives, related rates of change problems, computing derivatives by first taking the natural log of both sides, Riemann sums, and computing definite integrals. We also spent some time making a review sheet that details how to do different types of problems so that the student has a quick reference instead of having to page through all the packets to find the needed information."
"During this session, we worked mostly on sentence structure in the student's homework. She did really well with this, and we can come back to it in the future assuming it is a part of more assignments, but it's an area I think she inherently understands. One thing I want to do in the future is help her memorize simple addition facts. She is definitely able to do 3+3=6, but she still likes to count using her fingers. I'd like to go over simple problems like this (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, etc.) so that she won't have to think about the answer, she will just know it. I think this will also be helpful with her subtraction skills, so she will be able to figure out that because 3+3=6, then 6-3 must equal 3. This type of logic in addition and subtraction is something I'd like for us to go over."
"Today we reviewed most concepts covered on the pre-algebra diagnostic test in preparation for the student's retest. We went through about 25 practice problems, and reviewed procedural steps for certain types of problems so she could recognize what was being asked, and how to proceed in solving. I sent her another diagnostic to assess her progress over the past month. Based on those results, we will focus on skill gaps."
