"I tutored Student 1 for the first hour and Student 2 for the second hour. On both lessons, we spent the majority of the time on math (the entire time with Student 2), and then did a little reading comprehension. Student 1 and I mostly went over fractions. We converted fractions into decimals and percentages and vice versa. Once I showed her how to do it, she picked up on it quite quickly. We also turned improper fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa. Once again, she was able to grasp it pretty quickly. Student 2 and I added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided fractions. He stumbled a little with the steps, but after more and more practice, he was able to do it himself. Both students need to practice what we went over today so that they can retain it for the test. I gave them plenty of math worksheets and reading comprehension practice over the next week."
"The student worked on 3 timed practice tests from a set I sent him. We corrected those and discussed the problems he had. I am repeating test strategies and personal approaches for him to internalize. Today's reminder was about setting a pace, going back for difficult problems, reading questions carefully, AND for reading comprehension--read the first sentence of each paragraph to gain a quick, overall grasp of the text, then scan the questions to know what to look for when starting to read. We reviewed vocab from the 1st few practice tests for repetition purposes. Understanding of some math concepts are gelling well and he works with increasing confidence there. The next two sessions will be preceded by him doing timed practice tests. The goal is to make this experience familiar and doable."
"The student took all four sections of the Middle School practice test. She had very few wrong on reading comprehension and quantitative. We reviewed them, but those three portions are just where they should be. We still want to work on the verbal portions. I have assigned her to make flashcards from the list of words in the prep book for middle school, plus added some upper school which I have noticed are on the exams. We will review those flashcards during Wednesday's session and try to create some mnemonic devices so she can remember the words we review."
