Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During yesterday's session, the student completed one full, timed Reading Test. She was able to finish the test within the allotted time frame (with a few minutes to spare) and she scored very well! We discussed the incorrect answers in detail. Afterwards, the student completed two English Practice Sets (also timed). We went over the incorrect answers. For homework, I assigned one full Reading Test (timed), one full English test (timed), and a practice essay (timed). Overall, the student did very well on the test. I have made a chart to record all of the scores and trace her progress. During the next session, she will complete a timed English Test."
"The student and I worked on the reading, science and English portions of the test today. He did a FANTASTIC job!!! He's been working really hard to improve his reading speed and it totally showed today! He bumped his score up 9 points!!! All three sections improved dramatically. Well done!!!"
"During our initial session, I asked the student about her previous experiences with the ACT and what her goals were for this time around. She explained that she had taken the test once before during her junior year and that this time around she wanted to score much higher--about a 29--in order to obtain admission at her preferred. We briefly discussed a general strategy for making large improvements to the overall score, wherein I stressed the importance of incrementally improving her scores in each of the subject areas rather than relying solely on a monumental increase in any one subject to carry the average. Because she had not attempted the test in a year, I asked her to complete a timed diagnostic test to see in which areas she had improved and which areas, if any, she had lost ground. I gave her a shortened practice ACT test and timed each section, then graded her responses. She was surprised to find that her highest score was in Reading, which she finds difficult to complete within the time limits. During the remainder of our session, we discussed what challenges she found hardest in each section, identifying punctuation errors in Writing, math concepts that she had not reviewed in several years, and reading speed in the Reading section. Our next session is planned for tomorrow afternoon, and she has agreed to review the questions she missed on her practice test before then so that we may focus on the questions which gave her the most conceptual difficulty."
