Recent La Grange Park Study Skills and Organization Tutoring Session Notes

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Colleen in La Grange Park, IL
Today we studied all the topics for which the student is getting one last chance at passing on his math competency tests. The program is designed to allow for roughly 2 practice problems (sometimes 4) to solve in each competency before moving on to the next. We went through re-learning and practicing 12 separate competencies dating back to the beginning of the school year, which included some online instruction as well as remedial instruction in basic math, multiplication, division, exponents, and fractions. Some study skills we hit on are: 1. show your work clearly; 2. use more space, write larger; 3. estimate to see if your approach is reasonable; 4. watch your positive/negative signs and basic addition/subtraction; 5. write out each step (don't shortcut); 6. check your work. We noticed that he's made significant improvement in math. His first half-term test percentage was 35%, and his second half is 64.6%. We will continue to focus on these areas.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Chad in La Grange Park, IL
In today's session, we worked extensively with the slope-intercept form to find equations of lines passing through two points, slopes of lines passing through two points, and to discover the rate of change of linear functions. We reviewed X/Y tables and graphed our results. We even worked with line translations, parallel and perpendicular lines. Other topics included undefined slopes and tricks for telling whether or not a slope is positive or negative. After our algebraic exercises, I offered to help her with her music theory homework. I had her teach me what she knew so that I could help make conclusions. By teaching me, she was able to make a couple of breakthroughs. I've also offered to email her teacher about supplementary resources in the hope that I can help further. This was a very strong session! I will send her a practice test to reinforce the skill sets of today's session. Her retest is this coming Wednesday.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Tami in La Grange Park, IL
The student continues to improve his grades. He is keeping up his awesome binder. We purged items that he no longer needed and reviewed new assignments for the week in Chemistry and Algebra 2. We entered new items on his calendar to ensure that he has time to study for every class but also to be sure that he has times for extra review in Algebra 2. I showed him how completing the reading and attempting the homework assignments prior to class will aide him in comprehension the next day in class. I also encouraged him to use down time (such as commercial breaks, riding to school, while eating afternoon snacks or breakfast) to review flash cards that were created during our session. This way the study time is maximized for reading time. I also reviewed his English essay. The essay was very well written but had a few grammatical mistakes and was lacking citations for abstracts used. He had made great changes in his transitional sentences, and the paper flowed very well. I impressed upon him that he must cite sources to avoid plagiarism, and he said that he understood. His family is extremely supportive and he is making a very concentrated effort to turn his grades around.

Today, he and I worked through his French homework, and I showed him some handy conjugation charts for the verb "etre" to help him with future studies. We completed his other homework in Theology covering Lectio Divina before moving on to some extra work on his upcoming English essay on Catcher in the Rye. I helped him start a body paragraph with appropriate transitions to meet his narrative about the book, and we also completed an outline for the remainder of his rough draft.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Michael in La Grange Park, IL
Today, I had the student begin with a warm up review of the same materials from the previous day. The goal is to have him recognize the problem solving strategy for each type of problem. For the most part, he can recall the different concepts (like identifying supplementary vs complementary angles). We worked on another worksheet of similar problems from the previous day and he improved with each one. He sometimes likes to 'guess' at the solution to problems rather than taking a more systematic, intuitive approach. I try to impart this problem solving mentality to the student as we practice each day. The first major quiz or test will show if he can work independently. He is definitely capable of doing well in this class. I hope to give him a quiz-like review this week to get better idea of his general understanding.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Sarah in La Grange Park, IL
Today, I had the student finish his social studies homework and put that into his backpack. Then, we went over his language arts homework where he had to do an analysis of a quote and a thesis statement, so we did that and he put that into his backpack. He received an updated math sheet from his teacher so he did that, put it in his backpack, and he finished his homework! I will see him Monday.
