"For this session, we began by reviewing the student's homework from English class, which was an outline for a chapter in her book. We discussed how to format a outline on both paper and the computer. After the student completed the outline, we discussed grammar, reviewing parts of speech and sentence components. Next week, we will continue the grammar lessons with a focus on sentence combination and parts, including phrases and clauses. We also read the narrative essay "Context" by Dorothy Allison. We discussed the reading and the essay assignment for it, called a rhetorical reading response. This essay concisely discusses the summary of the way the text was written, focusing on the main idea, development/evidence, purpose, and audience. She drafted this first paragraph to the RRR. Next week, we will draft and finish the second two and final paragraphs of the assignment. The second will be about the student's personal response to the text, and the third will be an analytical paragraph. For this essay, we worked on prewriting and drafting this session. We will continue drafting next session. We will also review revision strategies once at that stage in the essay. She understood the material and did a great job writing her responses to both the outline and the reading."
"We tried some more difficult language readings based upon current news. He was competent but suffered some difficulty with large words. We will work on that in future sessions."
