Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I have begun to focus on specific topics and will continue to progress through those topics until the end of the year. He is making little improvements."
"The student needed to study for a quiz on finding volumes of solids of revolution using disk, washer, and shell method. So I guided her through setting up the integrals for the different methods in order to find the volumes. It is crucial to have an accurate sketch of these solids to set up the problem correctly. She understands the fundamentals, and just needs more practice visualizing the problem and setting up the integral."
"We worked on three subject areas: (1) English essay of "My Ithaca", (2) Review of Algebra, (3) Mandarin Chinese. I helped the student to brainstorm his thesis. I asked questions to help him think about real life examples related to the metaphors (support/hindrances) used in "Odysseus". He has impressive math calculation ability and is a fast learner. As with any subjects, practice makes perfect. His Mandarin speaking skills are improving when he gets more practice every week."
"In today's session, both students worked on their HW from school on conversion of metric units. Also they both were given a math packet on various problems on mathematical operations. Student M did well on that, however Student N struggled on subtraction problems. He was given few more subtraction problems to practice. Student M was asked to do some word problems on metric units, while Student N was given a math packet as HW."
"We worked on functions problems. Functions can be added, subtracted, multiplied, divided, and composite. The inverse of a function is found by switching the x's and the y's and then solving for y. We graphed functions, esp. square root functions, and analyzed their domain and range. We wrote equations for polynomials given some of their roots using the formula y=a(x-s1)(x-s2)(x-s3)(x-s4) etc. where s is the solution(s)."
"The student and I went over her final review. We covered slope, word problems, and sales tax/percent. I gave her a few sample problems to work on, and she was fine solving them."
