Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I did a small refresher for the material we learned yesterday, then we moved unto the huge subject of positive and negative integers. As a concept that is entirely new to the student, she did a very good job in staying level headed and working to figure the ins and outs of it. I was really happy to see her brave this subject and try to take it on. We closed the session with a little bit of work with combining like terms and using her knowledge of positive and negative integers."
"Student 1: Tonight we started reading to balance out the start of our session last night. We continued to read from the story book about the carrousel horses. The student was much more attentive tonight and responded to all of my questions pretty easily. One challenging thing I tested her on was identifying the meaning of words as used in the sentence. This time I asked her what the word "important" meant in relation to the story. She was able to define the word for me, but I had to lead her to its significance in the story. I then had her write 5 sentences about why her family was important. She had identified this as being the most important thing to her, but only listed 4 things when I had asked her to write a sentence. She seemed confused when I told her that those weren't quite sentences, but then she corrected herself well. For math, we combined reducing fractions and percentages. I first asked her what a fraction was in percentages. Then I would give her a fraction to reduce into a known percentage. She did really well in these two categories, but was less comfortable when I gave her a numerator and asked for the denominator that would make that a specific percent; e.g., "If I have ()/10, what number has to go up top to make it 50%?" She eventually did really well here too. Student 2: The student started with reading. She is a very strong reader. We will work on math on our next session."
"This was our final session before the test. I spent the session reviewing all of the material we had gone over, as well as the structure of the test. Additionally, I went over the essay portion of the test with the student for the first time. She is a strong reader and has a good vocabulary, so I knew that she would not need much help with that portion of the test. I just went over the structure of the essay and a couple writing tips."
