"We covered the verbal section from the practice test. We also partially covered the math section of the same test. The student should continue practicing on his own. It was a great sessions!"
"The student and I spent our first session focusing on the Verbal section of the SSAT, both the synonym and the analogy sections. We began going through the synonym questions from the practice test that she had taken. I had her explain how she goes about solving them, and we reviewed some of the questions she had gotten wrong. I encouraged her to make connections between the given word to remember if she had ever heard the word before. I did warn her that sometimes connections can trip you up if you make the wrong connection, and I stressed the importance of remembering that two words can sound the same and have very different meanings. I also encouraged her to eliminate choices that she knew to be false, and to read words out loud. Sometimes she realized she had heard a word before, but just hadn't read it before. We then focused on the analogy section. I encouraged her to make sure that she knew the clear connection between the two given words, and then consider the answer choices. Sometimes she found an answer choice that was similar, but not the specific relationship, so I warned her to be careful in these situations. I discouraged her from guessing unless she was sure of the connection between the given words. I also answered a lot of her questions in terms of test-taking strategies, when to guess, etc."
"The student and I finished our work with percentages today. She seemed more comfortable with it by the end of the session. In reading, we looked at her vocabulary words. She is able to recall most of her previous words and is working on a few new words each session. We also looked at 2 different reading passages to review strategies for summary and detail questions. I scheduled my last 2 sessions with her for next week. Her test is January 10."
