Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I met again today. We decided to focus on Reading because he feels that that is his weaker subject. We worked on passages in the ACT prep book. We talked about how to read these passages, something that may seem basic, but often students don't give these passages all they need (following each line, listening to the voice in your head, etc.). My overall impression is that the student can perform very well as long as he takes in everything at first. We really worked on the fiction and social science passages, and we will focus on humanities and natural science passages in our next session."
"The student has made progress, and he improved his scores on the practice English and Math tests. For the first half of the session we went over problems he had missed on these tests. In the English section, I emphasized the need to stay concise and clear, and the fact that the ACT generally does not like flowery or overly descriptive language. We also discussed the need to read the entire sentence (or paragraph, where applicable) to fully understand the context of certain questions. In Math , the student is having difficulty with word problems. We discussed turning problems into equations and also simplifying them either by plugging in numbers or turning complicated numbers into simple ones. We will continue to work on these types of problems. We finished the session by working on some Science issues. I pointed out that that whether or not one understands the underlying science in these questions, most of them can be answered by simply interpreting the graphs and charts. We discussed eliminating answers and seeing how answers are often right on the page. This week, the student will do 2 full practice tests in both Science and Reading, and we will go over them in the next session."
"We worked through practice sections together, and I designed lessons around the problems the student was having trouble with."
