Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered verbal by reviewing vocabulary, and doing some practice passages. We then went over math problems for an hour."
"During this session, we started out by reviewing the student's diagnostic test and going over all questions she had had trouble with, paying special attention to any patterns that emerged as far as areas that were particularly challenging. I identified that her Writing Skills score would probably be helped by working on vocabulary, and assigned sections 1-6 of the Vocab List in the test book for her to go over before our next session, looking for unfamiliar words that we could work on. I then devoted the next half hour to beginning a review of math tactics. We discussed the pros and cons of using a calculator, back-solving, using numbers in place of variables, and eliminating absurd answers. We will pick up next session with a review of sections 1-6 on the Vocab List and then move on to Section 6-2 in Math Tactics."
"Went over the practice test he did earlier in the day. The student has shown considerable improvement - Math is still a weak point, but he is doing much better in CR and writing."
"Went over the entire test, emphasizing how the difficulty scale works. Then focused on Reading Comprehension."
"The student definitely has the potential to do well, especially on the verbal. We'll work on the math more, paying attention to answering the question that they ask. This week, the student will take a diagnostic test and make some flashcards and keep reading "The Count of Monte Cristo!" I'm always happy when students read classic fiction -- that's really the best way to prepare for the passages!"
"Went over the reading comprehension and math sections that the student had completed prior to the session, then timed a writing and math section and went over them."
"We went over test-taking skills including heavily marking up the page, using the pen, eliminating wrong choices, and working one column at a time (for sentence completion)."
"Reviewed client background, developed tutoring plan, did vocabulary exercises, logic riddles, and argument analysis."
"The student and I went through what she said she needed a pretty good refresher on - PSAT/SAT geometry. It had been a while for her since she last really explored geometry, but she was going through topics very effectively during our crash course! She excelled at visualizing complementary/supplementary angles, she was awesome at understanding transverse angles, and she could effectively reason out which angles were equal to each other! If anything, she struggled with what 90% of SAT-takers struggle with in the math section - right triangles. We worked extensively with 45-45-90 triangles and 30-60-90 triangles. I told her that special right triangles would be presented to her in several different ways, and I asked her to find me the different sides given different lengths. She picked it up quite quickly, but this is something I've got to continually reinforce, as it doesn't come intuitively!"
"We reviewed a little bit of every section during this session. The student did very well on the math section, and his writing section is improving."
"Today we looked at the student's PSAT packet and began by discussing the Critical Reading section. We wrote down some strategies for the sentence completions and passage-based reading."
"We went over the math section I assigned for homework, and then worked on some reading and writing sections together. I assigned a full practice exam for homework."
