Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has an exam tomorrow. I made him a review sheet and he asked questions about it. I believe he is ready for the exam, but the occasional error appears. He also had some extra credit problems I helped him with. These were cool questions that dive deeper into the chain rule and the definition of derivative (both forms!)."
"This session we were back at the student's house, and able to work through his homework assignment together. The homework focused on adding fractions and finding the lowest common denominator. He is starting to grasp the concept of multiplying the numerator by the same thing as the denominator, but still needs more work on it. Hopefully we get more practice next week. He is showing some good improvement in factoring, which is still a part of even this new concept."
"We mainly prepared for his test this Friday by going over the sections and reiterating main points. He has shown considerable progress since we last reviewed each section, as he has demonstrated better understanding and improved problem solving. However, he still needs to work on not making small mistakes."
"We went through her questions about absolute value and then we covered her PSAT practice exam materials. I explained the concepts that she needs to know for this test and she solved about 14 questions for them. Then, we went through the actual practice test and I asked her to solve them for me. She did well."
"Today the student and I worked on multiplying fractions using a block method. After that, I showed her the faster way of multiplying the numerator and denominator. She went ahead and she discovered canceling out. She grasps all of these concepts well. She finished her homework on cross canceling, and then we reviewed Block 4. Overall, she is a delight to work with each week."
"The student and I continued to work on the PSAT problems, and then once we finished we discussed his homework from school. At school, they were working on both direct substitution and synthetic division with equations bigger than x to the power of 3."
"Graphing polynomials, completing the square, multiplication & division of polynomial, long division of polynomial. He completed his take home worksheet. We also discussed the PSAT. We reviewed his vocabulary words & I gave him some pointers on taking the test."
"Both students worked through algebra homework this week, which included graphing linear equations and finding points of intersection, using both graphing and algebraic methods."
"For this session, we reviewed all topics covered since the previous exam, including matrix algebra, solving systems of linear equations with matrices, combinatorics, and probability. The student is doing well with all of the topics so far, and usually just needs a brief reminder on how to approach problems before being able to solve them on her own."
"We reviewed logarithmic equations and properties for the student's upcoming test. Once we went over the properties of logs, he was able to utilize them to solve the problems without too much issue. I think the session will improve his score."
"The student is really getting a handle on unit conversions. Today we previewed square roots, and she did great with the new concept and was able to flip back and forth between squaring and square roots in a little verbal drill at the end."
"We covered my favorite subject, probability! Specifically, using frequency tables, finding conditional probabilities, P(A OR B), P(A AND B), P(B|A), probability trees, and so forth. I saw that the student scored a C on his AP statistics exam. I left the student with extra practice involving checking with the professor regarding the assumptions on a certain formula, and also any untreaded problems we do not cover on the sheet."
