Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this initial meeting, we quickly reviewed the student's assignments in English and Social Studies. I helped him to complete his foreign policy essay. We looked at the rubric and project outline, and then I helped him to formulate a thesis. I walked him through the creation of an outline using a three-point body to defend his thesis, and then we worked together to find source evidence to prove his claims. I left him with the task of turning the outline and sources into an essay. Next session, I will review the work he did on his own and then strategize a plan for completing other assignments."
"Today we focused on vowels. I introduced words that contained long vowels and short vowels and compared and contrasted them. I gave the student a list of rules that outlined when certain vowels are used and how to identify them. I allowed him to take notes on the material and gave him different examples of how to use the vowels. Next I gave him a list of words that contained long vowels. I explained to him the importance of recognizing different vowels in words in order to help figure out the spelling of unknown words. In addition, I gave him a list of rules referring to double vowels. He also took notes on this material. I gave him some time to review his notes and then gave him a list of spelling words. The spelling words contained the long and short vowel combinations that we discussed in order to give him practice with the new material. He did well with the spelling words. Lastly I gave him a list of words and asked him to give me the definition and use the words in a sentence. I suggested that he starts reading more in order to increase his vocabulary and enhance his reading skills."
"We went over the outline, and I made comments in order for the student to plan rough draft for a paper about the 1980 presidential campaign (Carter vs. Reagan) and arms control."
