Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session I read through the final version of the student's memoir, which we started last week. It was really good! He'd listened to the things we talked about last week -- he went back through to add sensory details and to add variety in his sentence length. The only mistake I found was issues with verb tense. I made him aware of this and helped him to edit all of the verb tenses. He was able to find and correct most of the past-tense verbs without my help. Other than that we edited other small items in his memoir -- issues of descriptions that made sense to him but weren't necessarily clear to an outside reader, small spelling mistakes, etc. I think this memoir is a really good example of some of his finer writing moments."
"We spent our last session of the year with the student writing his last English paper. He wrote the paper with a little input from me, and then I helped edit and make some recommendations for improvement."
"The student is still working on her activism project relating to the legal system. She needs to do a letter as well as a PowerPoint presentation. After determining what her topic will be (underfunding and overworking of public defenders), we discussed what she needs to do to get the project done. She has now done research on the state senator who handles bills related to the legal system. She has called the office and obtained a letter from the senator to the governor asking for more court funding (as well as a copy of proposed legislation which would increase the funding). To draft her letter, she is going to thank the senator for that letter, but suggest that a new bill could be focused specifically on increasing funding for public defenders so that poor/indigent people can have better representation in court. The student has written a partial rough draft of her letter, which I reviewed, and she will now revise it and submit it to her teacher. Next session we will work on finalizing the letter and the PowerPoint."
