"The student did a wonderful job today working on number analogies, paper folding, and figure classification. The paper folding is very easy for her, and she got all of them correct. For number analogies, we discussed how sometimes the relationship involves addition or subtraction, while at other times it involves sets (i.e. multiplication). She grasped this concept and understood that sometimes she would have to check the answer choices to see which possibility was correct. For the figure classification questions, we worked on breaking the problems down into pieces and looking at one piece at a time to rule out answer choices. In addition, we continued to explore and list identifying factors in the figures: color, number, size, location, direction, and # of sides. Next time, I want to show her how to use the figures in the number analogies to help count rather than count in her head."
"I started by showing the student example test questions from the reading section of the assessment exam, and he worked through the problems. I will continue to evaluate him as he takes practice tests and formulate a plan that guarantees his success on the reading test."
"The student did a lot of great work yesterday. The focus was on reading comprehension and writing, and he really nailed it with the book The Lemonade War. I read the 21-page chapter out loud to him as he took notes on the main ideas that arose on each page. He wrote three pages of notes, with only two lines of unnecessary excessive detail. Everything else was pertinent in terms of summarizing the chapter. He really impressed me."
