Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The first student reported that he did 8th grade activities in math this past week. I gave him factoring polynomials problems and solving for variables in problems with radicals. I reviewed vertical line tests with him and slope-intercept form. The other student says he learned about factoring polynomials this past week. I gave him problems on these and also reviewed slope-intercept form and the Pythagorean theorem. Both the boys' attitudes toward the material were great."
"Today, the student and I worked on the math packet. We completed the packet together, and she excelled. We also completed several sprints, or timed worksheets, that she completed quickly and accurately. For our next session, I am going to have the next math packet printed for us to get started on, as well as more sprints."
"This session was a review for the student's final on Monday. We decided to start from the beginning and review every section of material to see how well he remembered it, and work on anything that stood out as needing review. We covered all of linear functions, including finding slope and graphing, solving systems of equations, working with absolute value and inequalities, and finished by practicing word problems for systems of equations. I would like to go over that area again at the beginning of next session because it still needs some work."
"Today we worked on synonyms and antonyms in the student's reading workbook. We also practiced writing different types of sentences and a few new vocabulary words. Then we worked out of his grammar workbook on compound predicates and compound subjects. Finally I quizzed him with some math problems to see what level of math he is at. He has trouble with order of operations, equations involving decimals, and positive/ negative numbers. Next week we will focus more on these areas and less on language arts. However, since school is ending soon, I assigned a summer reading book: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. If he could get this and read chapter 1 by next Thursday, that would be great."
"The student and I started to review for her final exam. She had an old test that we did together. Overall, she did a great job. She needed to review the formulas for conic sections: circles, ellipse, hyperbolas and parabolas. Also the formulas for transformations and the properties of logs needs to be reviewed. Other than that she have no problems and does have a good knowledge of the rest of the topics/concepts. Next Saturday we would finish reviewing for the final and I think she would be ready to do very well on the final."
"Today the student and I worked on as many review problems as we could during our time. I also went over some test-taking tips for him to use when he takes his final exams. I will write some more problems for him to practice with when he has time and hopefully that will help him keep the concepts we went over fresh in his mind as he goes into the math tests."
