Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed his first tutoring session aimed at improving his pre-algebra skills. During the session, he and the tutor reviewed a number of topics including the Cartesian plane, input-output tables, and evaluating algebraic expressions. He completed practice problems pertaining to each of the aforementioned subjects and the tutor provided assistance, when necessary. Throughout the session, he displayed a positive attitude toward learning and worked diligently to complete each assigned task."
"The student and I went over some problems from a practice test for the ACT. We focused on linear equations, geometric word problems, and elements of a function. She did awesomely on all of the sections and understood the concepts once they were explained to her. I also sent over a few more practice tests to her student email so that she'll have a few more resources."
"Yesterday we worked through a worksheet on exponents that the student had from class. We discussed ways of simplifying exponential expressions. I showed her how to treat complicated expressions one base at a time to make the problems easier. We then worked through several more practice problems to apply this skill. She did very well with the problems we worked through; I see definite improvement since the last time we met. I think she will do well on her upcoming makeup quizzes."
"Today we moved into information that covered simplifying expressions and solving equations. The student understood that he needs to find what x equals when working through equations, but was also trying to do this when simplifying expressions. I distinguished the differences. The misconception was cleared up and he was able to use the distributive property to rewrite the given, then combine like terms to write the simplified form of expressions. The student was able to solve multi-step equations without difficulty. I was pleased to see him easily undo the equation using opposite operations in the correct order. The student was interested in techniques to solve equations using the calculator. I showed him graphical techniques to find solutions as well as a strategy to verify if your simplified form of a given expression is correct. I left the student some additional problems to finish before our next session."
"The student did very well during this session. We finally finished the set of multi-step problems that we had been working on the last few weeks. I noticed that he has gotten into the very good habit of writing down the important information from the problem, and he rereads it multiple times before attempting it. He was also able to recognize instances where he needed to do multiplication. By the end of the set, he was doing some of the problems entirely by himself. Once that set was finished, we went back to adding fractions. He seems to be doing alright with the idea of converting fractions to similar denominators, but we had some trouble still with simplifying the answers."
"Today's focus was on using word problems to create expressions that encapsulate all the different topics of the packet. We're close to finishing the student's summer math packet, and he's been doing very well--engaging, fun, and learning a lot."
