Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this lesson, we moved on from reviewing pre-algebra topics and started on some of the most important basic ideas in algebra. He and I worked on graphing lines and solving simple equations with algebra. He concentrated well in the beginning of the lesson, so we spent a few minutes on patterns and sequences. These aren't algebra topics, but they're fun and they're very common on standardized tests, so it will be important for him to know how to recognize a pattern in a list of numbers."
"Today the student took a quiz over what we covered last time, and he will take another quiz on Tuesday over the same material; then we will move on to finish polynomials and linear functions."
"We spent the time reviewing rules of exponents as well as multiplying monomials, binomials, and polynomials. We're doing all of this currently as a lead up to factoring, which the student doesn't remember doing at all in school this past year. She did very well with all of the material and, aside from a couple small mental math mistakes, she correctly answered all of the questions. I picked up a workbook for her to use as well, so I assigned her some problems to work on over the weekend to keep the material fresh in her mind."
"We first went over a practice test that I assigned the student for homework. After going over it, he fixed a lot of mistakes. He seems to have made major strides from where he was, but is still a bit away from his goal on the state assessment. The weekend should be good to get his mind off of his tests a little bit. That way he will be rejuvenated come Monday for our next session. We worked on exponential functions after going over the test. He made large improvements in that area. I will be sure to start with that topic on Monday to reinforce the material."
"We covered linear equations--graphing them, solving them, and doing word problems. We also continued absolute value problems and graphing those as well. These concepts are all pretty new to the student, so it has taken a couple of sessions to get through Chapter 3, but looking ahead to other chapters, there are some things that he says he knows, so hopefully we will go through those more quickly. He has agreed to do more homework so that he gets the concepts quicker."
"The student demonstrated considerable improvement. She scored an 87 on her practice test. The only topics she struggled with were inequalities in a word problem format and some line graphing. We reviewed these questions as well as similar questions she had already done before. I am confident she can replicate this result for her next practice test. She was assigned the multiple-choice portion of her next test for her homework."
