Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued our study of exponential and logarithmic functions, looking specifically at Newton's law of cooling and the concept of half life. These provided some excellent algebraic practice, and the student seems to be very much in control of the material."
"The student and I worked on logarithmic and exponential functions during the tutoring session. She needed clarification on the properties of logarithms, so I made her a quick reference sheet with all of the important properties and rules associated with logarithms; in some cases, why they apply with reference to their inverse as a exponential function, and the change of base formulas. During the session, we were able to use the reference sheet multiple times, so she was able to see the importance of each property and how to use it. We also went over exponential growth and decay, and how to use the percent of growth/ decay to create a function. I made sure that the student took good notes as we worked through this material, so that she would have less confusion (if any) when she went back to go through them and study."
"In today's session we worked on practice problems for the second part of the student's final. This consisted mostly of graphing higher order functions. She is still having a little trouble with the actual graphing, so we will continue to work on this over the weekend. Tomorrow we are going to revisit chapters 2 and 3 to prepare for part one of her exams on Friday."
"Today, we had a final review of graphing and applying trig functions. Overall, the student has a very good grasp of the concepts required."
"We worked on more trig, focusing on the graphs of sine and cosine functions. We calculated period, found amplitude, and graphed functions. We also discussed phase shift. The student seems to grasp the basics, and they will be working on this for the next day or so at school."
"Today we covered factoring, trig equations, double angles, and half angles. We worked problems out of the book for review. The student seems to have a good understanding; she just needed a little guidance on getting started on the problems. She had a very positive attitude throughout the session and she had additional problems from the teacher to complete."
