Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We talked through the areas of the ACT the student would like to work on and determined that English and Reading were the sections needing the most attention. We started with English, and we talked about timing and strategy issues and how to approach the passage as a whole. Then we worked through individual passages and then talked through the difficult questions immediately afterwards."
"I gave the student a timed quantitative reasoning section. She is doing much better on these types of problems. We went over the practice section I gave her. We also went through a section of quantitative comparison problems together to increase her familiarity with them. We will continue working on them on Friday."
"The student and I had our first session today. She had questions about scrambled paragraphs so we went over that first. We then did a practice "mini test" to evaluate her overall strengths and weaknesses. We went over most of the math section that we did and she is a quick learner/able to reproduce what she learns with practice problems."
"We debriefed on the student's test and she feels she did very well! Most of this session was devoted to her Nightingale essay on Anna Wintour. It's good to see her opening up to discuss stuff she's really interested in."
"The student and I covered the ACT Science section today. I explained the different types of questions she can get and we worked through an entire section together. I tried to stress the importance of order that questions are completed in, as well as double checking work and writing as much as possible to avoid unnecessary mistakes. We concluded by discussing the Reading section so she can prepare in advance for our last tutoring session before she takes the ACT."
"The student and I completed the test and worked on the other test. He is to complete the two remaining sections before our next meeting. He did well on his essay for the test."
"The student and I continued to work on critical reading, doing more practice questions and focusing on re-reading. I asked him to time himself taking a practice critical reading assessment section to go over for our next session."
"We covered basic molecules of life, water, and hydrocarbons. We also did practice problems and looked at the concepts in the book. She was able to grasp the concept of carbon bonding really well. It clicked for her in a great way."
"We went over a section she had completed and then concentrated on the short double passages and the longer critical passages. She takes a complete practice test on Monday. The only thing she needs to do is maintain her focus. Four more weeks to go for the test."
"Today, I had her complete several questions on sentence completion. We reviewed a math section in the practice test that she did with her dad. I assigned her extra new words to improve her vocabulary."
"We covered a large portion of the geometry section including lines, curves, circles, and clocks. She will be practicing writing on her own. We're coming up on having reviewed almost all the math, so that's a win. A big strategy we talked about today is graphing instead of solving by hand whenever possible, as it is usually quicker, less taxing, and there is less room for error. She made good progress on what we reviewed from previous sessions."
"We discussed all sections of the SAT, several major problem types, as well as other tests (AP and SAT Subject Tests). The student is invested in learning. We discussed various strategies and approaches for certain types of problems that the student was less familiar with. I left the student with practice material for next time."
