Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began working on his final exam review. Hopefully we'll be able to complete it when I return on Thursday."
"Today I evaluated where the student is in French. I wanted to see what her strengths and weaknesses were and which concepts are most difficult for her. I think she struggles most with adapting to a new language. I hope to improve her ease with conjugations and vocabulary. I also hope to get her more accustomed to French in general."
"We went over sample test problems that covered concepts such as probability, histograms, experimental set-up, and z-scores. I tried to help clarify some concepts that were a little confusing, and I think that the student was able to better understand them in the end! Great session!"
"The student and I went over worksheets reviewing direct objects, helping, and linking verbs today. In school, they are working on correct subject and verb agreement, therefore we spent half of our session practicing and performing in this area. For math, we reviewed solving math problems dealing with fractions and finding the answer by either multiplying or dividing. In addition, we worked on our math facts of 8 and 9 using flashcards and playing a game. We will continue to master these facts for the next couple of weeks as this will be a strong component in math for her in the upcoming weeks."
"Started out by giving the student a couple practice tests designed to identify concepts we needed to work on. I gave the first math lesson on absolute value. The other test was a passage based reading. I gave a short lesson about what to notate and why. Then, I had him go through another reading and apply these techniques. "
"The student and I continued to work on SAT math. After she completed a single math section on her own, we reviewed all of the problems in that section together. She was able to complete 22 of 25 problems, which I thought was definitely sufficient to achieve her target math score. I was very happy that she genuinely tried to avoid using her calculator. Afterward we had a fruitful mini-lesson on exponent rules. I think she should review these more before our next and final lesson. We also went through how to solve some of the hardest problems."
"The session started with a quiz over his vocabulary words and math equations. Then we moved to reading comprehension and mathematical achievement. He got half of the reading comprehension problems correct. We went back and made note cards on the steps to solving reading comprehension problems. On the mathematical achievement he scored 7/10 correct. I'm working on decreasing the number o incorrect selections and answering all the questions that are on the exam."
"The student and I worked on conversations at: an art gallery, music, and telling time. We started the session with him speaking a lot in Spanish about his work, and then moved onto expressing opinions about artwork using verbs such as gustar. We watched a video on Celia Cruz and commented on it in Spanish, and then practiced telling time before wrapping up the session with a second short video that incorporates beginner vocabulary. The student is leaving for his trip to Cuba on Friday and seems excited and prepared! I have enjoyed working with him as he is a kind and enthusiastic student!"
"Today we played bingo to review and then I introduced a new expression (tener + que) "have to" which is a high school level Spanish concept. I feel that the student is doing quite well in his lessons, however, and is prepared for a few more advanced ideas. He has to write 6 sentences for homework using the new expression."
"We went over what the student was recently working on in class. We read through an article and worked on word comprehension and conjugations. I left him with some studying tips for an upcoming quiz. Effective studying habits may be beneficial."
"The student practiced how to talk to a tailor about her quinceanera gown. She described all the details and fabric she wanted in her dress, and also the shape and different embellishments. We also described other gowns."
"Session was completed at client's house. Today's session focused (first hour) on reviewing the different types of pronouns in Spanish (because the client reported that the pronouns is the most difficult part to understand). During the last 30 minutes the tutor explained the prepositions. Client continues showing improvement."
