Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I talked about strategies for succeeding academically in 9th grade. We also worked through a number of tricky Geometry concepts that came up in her homework."
"The student worked on his math and world history homework. It was a productive session, and I believe he came away with a better understanding, particularly of the algebra."
"The student worked on a few homework assignments during tonight's session. First, he did a math worksheet of 25 pre-algebra questions. Any answers he got wrong I reviewed with him showing him the correct way to answer the problem on his whiteboard. After that, he worked on his vocabulary assignment which required him to provide antonyms of vocabulary from the current unit as well as complete 20 sentences with each appropriate word. Thirdly, he worked on starting his civics assignment which he can work on during class tomorrow. He placed 9 events from colonial American history in order and we discussed why they were important to our country's history. Tomorrow, he will write a brief summary of each event (based on what we discussed tonight) and illustrate them on a timeline. Finally, we reviewed conversions as well as other key concepts for his science quiz tomorrow. He told me he felt more confident on the topics because his teacher reviewed for the quiz during his class session."
"For this session, we covered Arthur Miller's play The Death of a Salesman. The student had a set of assigned questions that went deep into the play. Before we started, I asked him to summarize each major character in the play succinctly, since he had read most of the play. He did well, and then I asked him to cite events that demonstrated the character traits he described. He also performed well on that. Then we went into the questions, which were mostly characterization questions and also questions such as "How does Linda treat her children?", "What are the Lomans plan at the coda of Act I?", "How does Linda know Willy's interior feelings?", etc. I helped him finish all the questions within the session."
"I worked with the student today to help her shore up her language arts skills for the GED. We used an online learning tools site and were able to clarify nuances of several words and some grammatical skills so that she can pass the test on her next attempt."
"This session focused on guiding the student through his test corrections in Math. Though his thought processes were correct, he was forgetting certain steps in his multi-step problems, causing the answer to be incorrect. We reviewed concepts to help simplify the multi-step problems, such as combining like terms and rules for adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing negative numbers. As the problems continued, he grew more confident in his work and had fewer and fewer mistakes. After discussing this with him, we agreed that he would benefit with some extra practice with adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing negative numbers, but he showed great improvement by the end of session."
