Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"First, I gave the student a practice quiz on words 8-15 on his spelling lesson list. We then completed the exercises in that lesson. He did well with the alphabetization. In the proofing, which he typically likes and does easily, he missed some because he didn't notice the instructions about apostrophe use; he confused it with comma use. So, we halted and I did a review of apostrophe use. I will also revisit that on Thursday. He also had initial difficulty with the story completion segment in which he had to finish the story by selecting words from the lesson's list. Again, we halted, and I had him go over the directions, and we did the first one together. Once, he was oriented, he did it smoothly and correctly. To end, we read the final chapters of the "Ninjas" and read the "Prologue" to the next book, "Afternoon on the Amazon." For homework, he's to study for a spelling test on Lesson 9."
"Great session today. Talked about foreshadowing, author's tone and previewing the story. Also worked on inferring meaning from context clues."
"Topics: Geography, cultural studies, history, reading, sounding out words Progress: The student had to work on a project for a cultural studies presentation. We looked at a book about Bolivia, and I quizzed him to make sure that he knew some important basic facts about the country. He did well at this. Then we moved on to reading. I was very happy to keep him engaged by reading part of the story, but changing the words so that the events were outrageous. He was surprised, and this inspired him to want to know what really happened. Eventually he wanted to read things on his own!"
"We went over the student's missing assignments to find out what he could work on. We talked about ways he could organize himself better to turn his assignment is on time. He completed notes from his class by following an online PowerPoint presentation."
"The student read chapter 17 of TKAM aloud and he worked on his homework assignment which required him to list (in order) the sequence of events that occurred in chapter 17 (he did this assignment for chapter 16 prior to our session). We also found two examples in the book of literary terms (motif and onomatopoeia)."
"We had a great first session. The student and I explored the concept of connective thinking and mind mapping. We will begin a program of reading around the subjects and close reading of her course materials and concepts."
