Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This is day 3 of a four day session. We slid between Physics and Algebra again. Returning to her problem about a car with slow acceleration and a bike with fast acceleration, we determined not only the time when the velocities are the same, but the time when the bike actually overtakes the car. We discussed graphing this problem, and I showed her my solution in detail. We turned again to her text and the big four motion equations therein. She understands how to read such a book, scanning back and forth between figure and text."
"Today, we worked on functions and inverse functions and transformations of functions. The student did a great job figuring out how to find an inverse of a function after I shower her one example. She is a very quick learner and excelled in this subject matter."
"Today we reviewed all of chapter 3 (solving inequalities) for a test tomorrow. We began by correcting the quiz from last week. Then we discussed and solved problems from various sections in the chapter. I believe the student will do well on the test. In order to do so, he will also show all of his work and take his time!!!"
"During our session today, the student and I reviewed the material he has learned so far in his algebra class. We went over his class PowerPoints and solved a few of the practice problems from each section. After this, we reviewed his homework assignments; however, we focused mainly on the word problems as these are his problem area. He remained concentrated and focused throughout the entire session, so we finished everything in no time!"
"Today we went over percent problems. We did a number of tipping problems, then we moved on to some tax problems. The student did rather well with the tipping problems, and did okay with the tax problems after some explanation. We attempted a commission problem, where a shoe salesman receives a percent commission on top of a flat weekly wage. The student was unable to do this one, so we worked through it together. We finished the session with more tipping and tax problems."
"We went over factoring trinomials and polynomials by grouping and difference of squares numbers with exponents that contained variables, per request by the student's mother. The student was very comfortable with mental calculation and most of the problems seemed easy to him. A handful number of problems required that he should work out problems in steps and details as they help in speed and accuracy. I find that he also needs to memorize three concepts/formula for working with polynomials."
