Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is doing a lot better in critical reading - she is employing the strategies we've discussed and is getting great results. She needs to improve her confidence for vocabulary, and be more willing to make educated guesses about the meanings of unknown words."
"The student worked mainly in the long passages. He practiced the sections both with and without the timer. He's going to complete the test that we started, and we will have one more session before he takes the test."
"The student and I extensively covered the science section of the test. We used real test questions from the website. She is hoping to the test practice book from the library. We went through 6 passages, covering a multitude of problems, from data analysis, data synthesis, to conflicting viewpoints. She seems to enjoy several strategies that are very helpful, such as process of elimination and looking for keywords. I hope to boost the student's confidence, as she can really work through the problems! Next session, we will go over the math section."
"The student is making excellent progress on her strategies answering questions. Now, the main thing she needs to work on is improving her vocabulary, so she can do a better job on the sentence completion questions."
"The student and I had our first lesson for test prep. We spent half the lesson on the English portion of the exam and half the lesson on the Math portion. Overall the student did well on the exercises. Many of her mistakes on the English portion came from not understanding key vocabulary. For future lessons, we will add a vocabulary portion to the preparation. For the math portion, she did not have any particular struggles. We completed half of each portion of the exam and I assigned the other half of each section for homework. I will identify if there are any specific topics The student does not understand from the 6th-7th grade math portions of the exam based on the homework she completes and will focus mostly on learning the 8th grade topics."
"Student did a really great job today. He stayed on task and engaged throughout. We talked about general strategy for the reading section, and worked on passage mapping."
"Introduced the student to the SAT by covering the preliminary chapters. She completed a few questions for homework and did quite well. I asked her to bookmark the grammar rules on pages 101-102. Since the math section was her lowest score on the PSAT, we focused on that by working through 20 questions together. I went over test fundamentals including raw scoring, guessing strategy, substitution starting with choice C in math, and general logic for sentence completions."
"We covered some of the sections that were not covered in her class. Specifically, this included microscopy, cell theory and then in genetics we covered some of the patterns of inheritance, spermatogenesis and oogenesis, as well as crossing over and linked genes. She has a strong understanding of the concepts but needs to be refresh some of the terms! She should skim through the chapters we covered in her book and mark whichever concepts look unfamiliar so that we can go over them next time."
"We went through 2 whole math sections, then did the 2nd half of 3 other sections, without a timer, to help her get a feel for the harder aspects of the test. She does very well without a timer, making very few mistakes, so she just needs to take a deep breath and not get stressed on Saturday!"
"Today we covered more math fundamentals and some verbal skills. At this point, the student has a pretty solid understanding of the different types of questions she can expect to see, and is aware of several strategies for tackling them. In future sessions we will move to practice time management and dealing with problems of uncertainty. We will also further develop reading strategies."
"- The student and I finished going over the 5 main math topics on the SAT - By the end of our session, she felt comfortable with number operations, algebra, trig, and geometry review - She will take a practice full length test to go over during our next"
"The student and I wrapped up his test prep. He is ready for the test, he just needs a little more focus in vocabulary. But, I expect him to do well."
