Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did very well on the practice test, answering 34 out of 39 right. This is exceptional news, as he has always done much better on the writing section. His reasoning continues to be strong, and the same goes for his spelling skills. In addition, he is very good at answering questions from a poem. I am pleased with his progress, and if he stays calm and focused when taking this test, he should pass the English II exam."
"Because this was my first session with the students, I worked with them primarily on test prep strategies, while also getting a feel for their weak points. We started out with strategies for reading comprehension, especially where timing plays a big role in accuracy. I taught the student ways to spot the "shiny" answers, or those that the tests want you to pick, but are often too good to be true. We focused on reading the passage itself and not putting the boys' own opinions into their interpretation of the work. As I went through the passage with the boys, I helped them with new vocabulary. We then moved on to grammar. While they knew basic rules, I pointed out the trickier aspects that the exams would test them on. We practiced subject/verb agreement and simplifying sentences. Lastly, I had them do a speed drill with square roots to practice math under pressure. We walked through easier ways to simplify roots. I asked them to review vocabulary over the week, and next time we will start with a practice test to work on timing strategies."
"Today, I explained that I wanted to do a mini- assessment (a two-page algebra test) to see what the student currently knows. We covered several practice sections. As we worked, the student's performance improved quickly."
