Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we focused on pacing and time management for both the verbal and quantitative sections. The student's time management was pretty good today, but we'll keep working to make sure it's consistent."
" We kicked off today's session by doing the four practice reading tests. The student is doing a nice job of answering even the tough questions, and I've definitely seen improvement in this area. Her practice essay was weak today, and she's taking a very long time to develop her paragraphs. We came up with a new essay writing strategy that she's going to practice this weekend. Her goal will be to write a basic "skeleton"ù essay that hits her most important argumentative points, and then with any additional time, she'll add examples, details, and "filler"ù sentences. I've sent her a set of essay prompts as well as critical reading questions for her to practice this weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing how she does for our last session on Monday."
"Today we worked on the GRE verbal reasoning. We first went over strategies to use for the reading comprehension passages, including how to actively read sections, what kind of notes to make about passages and how to identify the tone, purpose and scope of the author. We also talked about how to eliminate repetitive answers and answers that do not line up with the author's style. We then worked on some vocabulary fill-in-the-blank questions. I introduced the concept of "road sign" words, which help to navigate the context clues in a question. We worked through several practice problems, and we discussed the definitions of words that she did not immediately recognize. I think she has good reading comprehension skills and understands most of the comprehension questions. Next session, we will focus on the quantitative section."
