Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by reviewing the reading comprehension practice problems I had sent to him last week. We re-read the first two passages, as he had answered some of these questions incorrectly, and went through the questions together. We also discussed some reading comprehension strategies that would be helpful to him while taking the exam. We briefly looked at the essay he had written last week, but we decided that it would be easier to view together if it were typed and we could work on the corrections together, so I asked him if he would be able to type the essay and send it to me in advance of our next session on Tuesday. We ended with some practice problems from the verbal reasoning section of the exam. We went through synonyms, and there were a number of words he did not recognize. I made note of these and will forward them to his parents; my suggestion would be to start making flashcards for these words as they come up so that he can practice them and become familiar with their meanings."
"The student is scheduled to take her ISEE exam in less than two weeks, so yesterday was our penultimate session together. I printed out the full-length practice exam from the ISEE website and she was very cooperative and did an awesome job working through the first three sections with me while I timed her progress. I was interested to see how she handled the specific ISEE questions from past exams under the time constraints. She did REALLY well with the verbal section but ran into some challenges with the first math section. I am going to grade them officially before I meet with her again, but it was obvious what she was most comfortable with and what she wasn't. I was happy that she used her strategies a bit on the math section. It seems like she got bogged down on a few tricky problems and panicked as time started to run down. I want to sit with her next week and go over some concrete steps she can take for certain common types of problems. She seems to respond to this technique with her math tutor, so I want to give her this guidance. The steps will be a perfect thing for her to review on the night before the exam to improve her confidence on test day."
"We worked on punctuation and capitalization today along with essay writing. The student is doing a lot better with his structure and adding details in his writing."
