Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent half of the session translating at sight. We alternated between translating word-for-word and having the student summarize what a given sentence said. This can also be a good exercise to aid reading comprehension. We spent the second half practicing vocabulary from Chapter 27."
"The student did a lot of preparation for today, which was really great and helpful. She made quizzes for her new words and began her study guide for her passive verbs test. We finished her translation assignment, which was difficult, but through which she learned a good bit about how to go back/forth from passive to active, and we discussed the unit's culture and ways to remember the facts. She took the test and did very well. I gave her some chart and handouts for deponent verbs."
"This was our first session. We started out by going through some review exercises that the student had found online. It was mostly dealing with the demonstrative pronouns and special adjectives. Several of the sentences were based on an earlier edition of the textbook. I was able to explain what was going on there, as well as point out these differences in my own, older, edition of the textbook. When we had worked through the sentences, we moved on to reading a couple of passages out of the Latin text, which contains a story keyed to each chapter of the book we need to read."
"Reviewed vocabulary, verb tenses (active and passive voice) including participle forms, comparative/superlative adjectives, grammar, and sentence translation."
"Reviewed a homework assignment; reviewed the formation and usage of the dative case as well as personal pronouns; reviewed vocabulary for an upcoming quiz."
"The student was absolutely outstanding tonight. I am particularly proud of how he led the session tonight, which is my goal for all my tutoring students. I had an entirely other topic for us to cover tonight, but he let me know about his test on 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-declension adjectives and irregular verbs coming up on Thursday, so we jumped right into a meaty lesson about those topics, which he handled well. He demonstrated a real command by the end of the session."
