Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student took her first practice full length recently. She scored a 12 on V.R., a 9 in B.S., and a 7 in P.S. This indicates that she is not having problems with reading comprehension. We went through each section thoroughly. I urged her to review the test and commit some things to flash cards and to rote memorization, such as kinematics formulas and the types of radioactive decay. I showed her different ways of looking at the Verbal Reasoning passages: paying attention to keywords in the scope of the passage, using the structure of the passage and the argument to predict where to find relevant information for inference-type questions, and using the question stem and answer choices to help focus on relevant material. I advised her to take the next full-length as a series of section tests, 1 per day, taking her time to apply these different strategies. Next time we will working more precisely."
"We covered the schedule I created for her, discussed the verbal chapters and exam she took and chemistry review and exam she took all over the weekend. We also went through Biology chapters 1-4 and reviewed the questions she missed. We then went through the Organic Chemistry practice exam and went through any questions she missed. She will go through Org Chem chapters 1-9, Physics chapters 1-2, and Biology chapters 5-11 for our next session. She will do practice test 2 and practice test 3 for verbal and will correct both."
"This session we reviewed a biological sciences section and a verbal reasoning section from a practice test the student took during the week. For verbal reasoning in particular we focused on strategies for breaking down passages and quickly mining them for the essential information. We also went through the questions for several verbal reasoning passages and discussed how to better understand the question and quickly provide a likely answer under timed circumstances."
"First, we continued with wave characteristics. We talked about dispersion, diffraction, refraction, reflection, total internal reflection and Snell's law and we did a number of problems from practice websites. We started optics but we will go into that more next week. We also went over chemical equilibrium and we will build off of that next week with Ka, Kb, and Ksp."
"The student got 22 of 24 correct on an arguments section. We worked through the two incorrect questions and then worked through a logic game. She is going to complete another section before we meet again."
"The student took two practice tests this past week, and he's continuing to see improvements, both on the test and the blind review after. Some issues linger, and we discussed a few of those today. He's good at Logic Games, but his shorthand still needs some work. He's doing a lot of things in his head that would be faster on paper. In Logical Reasoning, formal logic and inferences remain his biggest challenge. We worked on both issues today using one of the two tests he took. He's going to do another test this week, and we're going to discuss it and his last test on Saturday."
