Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student was working on algebra calculations of slope. He was working on a PowerPoint presentation for his Quest class. He worked on the presentation as I challenged him to be able to make his arguments if needed. I also challenged him on the content and length of his presentation. He made changes and then gave me his presentation. I told him to polish it up before his presentation to the class and gave him ideas for doing this."
"We worked on a review of the incorrect answers in his test on Algebra, covering polynomials and exponents plus products/factoring. We also practiced using a finals review packet. He sometimes overlooks a sign or a factor in his final answer mainly due to haste, which we will continue to work on."
"The student continues to do well and has continuously showed understanding and desire to keep performing at a high level. Over the next couple of weeks, we will keep working on class but also prepare him for his state assessment exam in math. I see happiness in his face knowing that he can overcome anything for this class."
"The student has his final exam on Wednesday, so the focus of this session was on preparation for that. He had a study guide with the different concepts that he learned this year, so I quizzed him on the fundamental understanding of the types of problems, what terms meant, and what the equations were, so that he could focus on the tools that he'll need to solve the problems. I also encourage him to take as much time as he needs to take the exam, as he does do better then he reviews his answers and thinks them through. As long as he does that, I am confident that he will pass."
"Today we finished the review packet. This included polynomial long division, solving quadratics using the quadratic formula, completing the square, graphing changes/ transformations, and sketching and interpreting quadratics graphs. We briefly reviewed each topic and did a few practice problems from each. The student will finish the practice problems before the test and will let me know if she has any questions. We might have another session before the final if she thinks it's necessary."
"The student worked on math and English. She had a large set of review problems for her math class, but since they were review, she had already mastered the skills for this homework assignment. We discussed the need to remain calm, and worked on good test-taking strategies, such as skipping a difficult problem and coming back to it later, taking the time to do a problem right, and checking her work. She has an upcoming book report, so I left her with a nonfiction book to read by Friday."
