Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed a class work and its observations on techniques and methods for eliciting information from interview subjects, the structure of his article and development of the themes, and various strategies for putting the observations to practical use. We also discussed another class work as an example of long-form journalism and how such a strategy might be used in a newsletter or other publications."
"We worked on various writing assignments for his English classes. He has seen definite improvements in his writing over the past few months."
"We discussed the play, "King Lear" that he had seen in London, then we went to work on preparing him for the exam for 6th graders on Monday and Tuesday of this week. We reviewed one of the essays he had done and confirmed that preparing for the SAT was much harder but there were differences in these tests that he should be aware of. We then reviewed the format and schedule for the test, and I reminded him of what should be his main concern--focus. After that, we went through a 183 page PowerPoint that lays out everything you could possibly want or not want to know about the exam in excruciating detail. Since he survived that, which took most of the session, I had enough time to discuss the student's reading habits--the books he reads are too easy. It is true that he reads adolescent novels for 13-18 year olds, but they are usually long and not as easy as they may seem. This said, I also think it is time for him to read more challenging material. So far, he hasn't liked what we have found for him. He will be looking at books this week."
