"The student and I began by talking about her Spanish class and her goals for tutoring, as well as some of her other interests and how Spanish can apply to those. She expressed a concern about learning grammar and being able to apply it to quizzes and tests. She is learning about the imperfect tense in Spanish. We started with a discussion on how it is different from the preterite, which is another past tense in Spanish. Using a story in English, I showed how various past tenses are used and she identified which verbs would be translated in preterite and which ones would be translated in imperfect. She showed a solid understanding of the difference between the two. After discussing the usage, we practiced conjugating -ar, -er, and -ir verbs in the imperfect as well as a few irregular verbs. We finished by working on sample sentences, where I would write the infinitive of a verb in parentheses and she would conjugate it in the imperfect. This exercise required identifying the subject of the sentence, which was more obvious in some examples than others. I showed her how to look to the previous sentence if there was not an obvious subject."
"We covered the student's Unit 7 vocab and the preterite vs. imperfect. The student rated the game and my notes a 9/10. We played a vocab app and I used my dry-erase board. I left him with practice. He made a 91% on his mock test."
"During this session, we went over the definitions we covered last week. We also practiced reading comprehension from the student's book. After every section, I asked her questions about the reading. For some she had to go back, and understood from context. She did well on both types of exercises."
