Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I worked on science, English, and writing. These were the three subjects that she felt like she wanted the most extra practice and review with. We started out by looking at science. We reviewed some of the main strategies for the science section and then completed nine selected passages. After science, we looked at the English section. We reviewed comma rules, semicolons, its/it's, whose/who's, who/whom, and some other commonly tested usage and mechanics skills. As she is able to go through the passages very quickly, we worked on practicing going back to check her answers. We also did a quick review of the writing section. We went over what the graders are looking for and how it should be organized. Then we looked at a sample essay and discussed how the student had addressed the "bigger picture" aspect in his/her writing and different ways she could do the same."
"To begin today's session, we debriefed about the ACT that the student took last weekend. She felt like she did quite well on the English and readings sections. She struggled in some areas, but she certainly felt more prepared for this test than her first one. She had difficulty on the Science section, especially passages with topics that she had never heard of. To practice this, we found several passages in the prep book with topics that she was unfamiliar with. On the first one, we worked through the topic and questions together. Next, I had the student work through a passage on her own. With each question, I told her to write her confidence level from 1 to 5 that she got the question correct. Of the six questions, she had two 5s, three 2-3, and one 1. I then had her explain to me how she got to her answer. Even on the ones that she marked a 5, she still qualified all of her statements with "if I did it right". She was exactly correct on these with her answers and reasoning. She even got all of the ones that she rated 2-3 correct too. This exercise was meant to show her that she knows more than she thinks she knows, and she needs to have confidence in herself. Right after she finished the passage on her own, she said she thought this one was tough, similar to the one on the ACT. But she still got 5/6 correct! This exercise should help her to not get overwhelmed with terms and topics she isn't familiar with. We ended the session by discussing some math concepts that she needed to review, including least common multiple and greatest common factor. We will continue working though some math and science sections for next time."
"Finalized preparations for the Saturday test, including short practice in each section and a good deal of reading prep. Reviewed and reinforced all strategies and discussed test day logistics."
