The nationally recognized High School Placement Test is required by many private high schools in order to assess incoming students. Some schools use the test scores simply as a tool for class placement, but some schools use the results to determine acceptance. Either way, it is a good idea for your child to spend some time on HSPT review in order to put their best foot forward. Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools are free online self-study resources that can help your child prepare for the HSPT. Free online Flashcards are one of the online resources available that can assist your child through comprehensive HSPT study materials.
Learning Tools offer comprehensive review for the verbal, quantitative, reading, and mathematics sections of the HSPT. The Flashcards provide a way to drill down on a specific concept within a subcategory, or to do a more general skills review within a broader category. They can help to assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses, target their study material, and focus on the areas in which they need to spend the most time.
The HSPT consists of approximately 300 questions to be completed in a 150-minute time frame. Students are encouraged to take a guess at any questions they find too difficult, so the more HSPT practice your child does, the better their chance of making a correct guess. The content found on the Flashcards is presented as multiple-choice questions that simulate the questions on the actual HSPT. Once your child selects an answer, the flashcard will flip over, and the screen will present the correct answer. A detailed explanation of the process to obtain the correct answer is provided, and explains the concepts behind reaching the correct answer. As an added benefit, the answers are automatically shuffled with each new visit to the Learning Tools site to study HSPT Flashcards. This feature allows for a more effective learning process, as it avoids memorization of answers based on their order.
Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools offer additional High School Placement Test study resources, including Learn by Concept, Practice Tests, and the Question of the Day. The Question of the Day provides an opportunity for your child to integrate a quick HSPT study session into their daily schedule, no matter how busy they are. Each day, a random question will be presented to your child. The results page showing the correct answer and a detailed explanation of the correct answer is included with this resource as well. Learn by Concept and the Practice Tests are arranged the same way the Flashcards are, allowing your child to focus on specific subtopics or a broader overview. The Full-Length Practice Tests provide your child with questions that simulate the experience of the actual HSPT, and both these and the shorter Practice Tests focused on specific topics offer a timed scoring assessment. You and your child can also register for a free account to track their progress with all of the Learning Tools, which will give your child the opportunity to create a truly unique and comprehensive HSPT review.
