How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?
For many students, the Secondary School Admission Test, or SSAT, is a nerve-wracking, unfamiliar experience. Students rarely prepare for the SSAT as part of their normal classroom routine, and panic on test day can dramatically and negatively affect their scores. An experienced SSAT tutor in Houston, Texas, can eliminate such uncertainty. Skilled SSAT tutors in Houston are knowledgeable about the exam and passionate about teaching. In one-on-one sessions with your child, they can puzzle apart even the most difficult quantitative, reading, or verbal questions. With their arsenal of strategies, they can teach to suit any learning style. Additionally, if you are unsure of your child's strong and weak points within the material, a tutor can help you discover that important information. For your convenience, SSAT tutors are able to meet you when and where you and your child are most comfortable.
There are three levels of the SSAT, including the Elementary Level, the Middle Level, and the Upper Level. The Elementary Level test is designed for students who are currently in grades three and four. Performing well on this test enables them to potentially gain entrance into a private school for fourth and fifth grade. The Middle Level test is for students in grades five through seven who are seeking entrance into a private school for grades six through eight. Finally, the Upper Level test is for students in grades eight through eleven seeking to gain admission into a private school for grades nine through twelve. The SSAT is made up of three distinct sections, including the Verbal Section, the Reading Comprehension Section, and the Quantitative Section. It also has a Writing Sample section, but this section is not scored.
The Verbal Section consists of analogies and synonyms. Your child will be expected to be able to interpret the analogies and identify the synonyms. This section is designed to measure how well your child is able to relate ideas to other ideas in a logical manner and how strong their vocabulary is. It has a total of 60 questions, with 30 questions about analogies and 30 questions on synonyms. Your child will have 30 minutes to complete this section.
The Reading Comprehension section requires that your child be able to understand what they read. They will be provided with arguments, essays, short stories, poems, and passages from novels to see if they are able to comprehend what they are reading. The reading passages your child will be provided with cover a wide range of subjects, including sociology, medicine, art, astronomy, and history, among others. While not completely necessary, it would be a good idea for your child to be familiar with these subjects. The Reading Comprehension section consists of a total of 40 questions and your child will have 40 minutes to complete it.
The contents of the Quantitative Section are different depending on what level of the SSAT your child is taking. The Elementary Level test offers questions based on measurement and probability, spatial sense, algebra and functions, properties and operations, and number sense. The Middle and Upper Level tests consist primarily of geometry and algebra questions.
While the Writing Sample is not scored, it is still a good idea for your child to take it seriously because it is sent to the admissions office of the schools they are applying to. Thus, both a well-written and a poorly written sample have the potential to be a deciding factor as to whether they get into the school of their choice.
