Recent Homewood Study Skills and Organization Tutoring Session Notes

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Joseph in Homewood, IL
I started the session by reviewing the student's Spanish homework that I had assigned him to do the night before this session. After this, I introduced another lecture and encouraged him to use a numbered outline format to take notes. Because he was less familiar with this format of note-taking, I showed him how word processors like MS Word and Google Docs have instituted pre-generated lists that you can use for note-taking. After finishing the lecture, I instructed him to work on Spanish vocabulary and then to complete two more pages of Spanish worksheets for "homework." For our next session, I will assign him a small assignment on a topic of his choice which he will research, outline, and present to me 2 weeks from now. This will encourage him to budget his time and use his planner to make sure he completes all steps of the assignment in a timely manner.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Susan in Homewood, IL
In our last session I used a website and had the student read passages and take notes on cells from reading. Today, we continued to focus on her note-taking skills. I had her take notes from listening to a lecture with no help from me. I decided to use the outline format because I think it's faster and quicker to learn. This time she used bolded words as a cue to write down that information and we stopped the video a few times. She wants to write everything down, so we worked on not doing that, in addition to using bullet statements and organizing notes by main idea and grouping key details. It was hard work but we accomplished a lot and the session went by quickly. She took the quiz at the end of each of the videos. My plan is to keep layering exposure to the material so that she sees the value of previewing material and how that approach will help her take notes during lectures and increase her understanding of the material. Note: I am using a learning tool app to preview her science topics she will learn this upcoming year. My goal is to use all the material from each of the videos (there are multiple activities and a quiz) to create her own science textbook. She struggled with science last year, so this strategy is to start the year with exposure to a great deal of the concepts and improve her confidence.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Ryan in Homewood, IL
Today was my first lesson with the student. I met him and his mother for the first time and she discussed in greater detail what she hopes I can achieve in helping him with his organization skills. He has a weekly planner for organizing his school assignments, household chores and free time. I helped him with his planning for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, mostly by just keeping him on task while he did it. We then reviewed an American government and economics assignment in which he had to explain (in his own words) the electoral college and corporate campaign contributions. I reviewed his use of conventions (spelling, punctuation, etc.) and written expression, and suggested some prompts for answers. We have our next session on Friday.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Rob in Homewood, IL
Today, we focused on finishing the SAT vocabulary lesson from yesterday, discussed the article that she read about teacher pay scales in Baltimore, and she responded to questions about German Immigrants growing coffee in Guatemala (from "Uncommon Grounds"). While I did not see any grades, I am happy with the progress she is making with problem solving while solving questions with new SAT words. She has shown much improvement with using context clues to help her and paying attention to the part of speech in which the words are used. She also has done a good job of recognizing the importance of connecting her text references to her statement. I will continue to make sample essay questions for her to score to help her gain a more complete understanding of how a written response should and shouldn't look. She was asked to finish her essay response that she started towards the end of the session. We will go over it more when I see her next.
