"The student began working on a practice test. Throughout the practice we discussed specific strategies that can help her answer correctly."
"At this session, the student and I discussed chapters 3 and 4 of her book. I asked her whether she would like to spend time doing writing instead of only reading, and she did not seem particularly interested in this option. She also mentioned that her class will be doing book groups soon, and I encouraged her to stick with the current book until we finish it, and then we can move on. The student briefly reviewed the end of Chapter 2, most of which she recalled accurately, and we discussed Chapter 3. She recalled a description of a wolf pup shivering "as if his limbs might shake loose" and I reminded her of the term "simile" to describe this. We then discussed other characters that appear in this chapter. We discussed the words "optical phenomenon" and "mirage," beginning the term "optical illusion" and "optometrist," which the student was familiar with, as a guide to help her come to an understanding of the definitions of the words. We also looked up the word "gyre" in the dictionary after both of us took guesses about the word's meaning. We discovered that the author used the word differently (to mean "past life") than the standard English definition (a spiral shape) and the student made a very thoughtful connection - the life cycle or "circle of life." I noted that the book can be hard to follow due to long passages filled with imagery and characters thinking about past events and worrying about the future, rather than linear action, but the student said she understands it."
