Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Reviewed homework on logic. Only one incorrect. Completed reading and questions about passages with 100% accuracy. Discussed passages to assess reading comprehension and interpretations; the student's doing well on both. Continued working on new vocabulary by using words in contextual sentences."
"Today we reviewed five sections in preparation for a test the student has next week. The material consisted of solving problems using the unit circle, finding the six trig functions when given a point, and using the law of sines and the law of cosines. I believe she should do well on her exam, she knows over half the material with no need of studying. The only thing she might have trouble on is with the law of sine and cosine, however, we will practice some more on those come Monday, so she can do great come Tuesday on her exam!"
"Tonight we reviewed vascular and lymphatic anatomy and physiology as well as endocrine anatomy and physiology. The student is trying to take her test by the end of this week, so hopefully we can work in a session before then (possibly Wednesday or Thursday evening)."
"The student and I worked with his spelling words today. We talked about the long vowel sounds and rule when words end in an "e". He did well and did awesome with his challenge words. He was very proud of himself for getting his challenge words right. We began working on his Reading homework and read for comprehension. He wrote four sentences on his own and needed very little help. We are continuing to use and practice sight words. "
"Today, the student and I covered some organic chemistry topics and further discussed how to approach the following months before the MCAT. We also reviewed some articles in The Economist, The New Yorker, and the Atlantic as a method of preparation for the MCAT verbal section."
"The student did not have a test to study for so she completed her homework from the supplement packet over 0 and negative exponents. We then did plenty of extra problems on simplifying monomials. We went over place values: writing numbers in expanded form from standard and standard form from expanded form and from word form. When asked to write a number given its description (11 thousands, 15 hundreds, 3 tens, etc.), she would draw her place value chart backwards. Once corrected, she did very well. I will bring supplemental activities with basic logic problems next week."
"The student and I went over her French homework and test prep. We covered reciprocal verbs and pronouns, past tense, banking vocabulary, and phonetics. She seemed to understand all that we learned. She has a good memory that will help her a lot."
"The student practiced using new words in a sentence. She learned the meaning of the prefix "un" and practiced figuring out the meaning of words that begin with "un." She is showing improvement in her memory of new vocabulary words, and in her ability to figure out the meaning of unknown words using context clues."
"The student and I worked on his homework, which was 45-45-90 triangles. We did most of the problems using the Pythagorean theorem but, then I showed him how to use the 1:1:square root 2 ratio. We finished his homework in a half hour, so then I started to teach him his next lesson, which is 30-60-90 triangles. I created some problems for him to work on, which tested these two kinds of special right triangles."
"The student has been working on Critical Reading, and his score is showing it. With the section he finished for homework, he is up to a 550! On the sections we worked through in our session, he got a 520, which is still improvement and I'm quite pleased. The student is doing better at finding the answer in the passage, and he does great with vocabulary questions when he remembers to fill in his own word. He is also getting better with the general format of the test, and he does not get as nervous. We spent about fifteen minutes talking about the essay section (5-paragraph form, use pre-selected examples and apply to any prompt) and then went over the basics again (get enough sleep, eat breakfast, etc.). He should do well tomorrow."
"We worked on many of her problems from her review packet. I think she did really well picking it back up as we were working. We also worked on a little factoring."
"The student and I covered material for the upcoming chapter on perimeter and area of different shapes. He seems to understand the material well and I expect him to do well with this unit. We then covered simple, compound, and complex sentences."
