Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I covered a few specific topics that will be on her upcoming assessment. We first focused on probability problems, and I gave her several examples involving cards, marbles and dice. We discussed how to identify independent events, favorable vs total outcomes and when to solve a probability problem backwards. She picked up the concepts after a relatively short period, and is going to practice this topic with a set I sent her. We also covered exponent rules, and how to factor large numbers raised to large exponents, so that the expressions can be simplified. I believe she benefited from going over these types of problems as they are a common point of confusion on this assessment. Finally, we finished our session with some geometry problems dealing with circles and multiple figures. In particular, we talked about using the given information to figure out measurements of adjacent shapes. Next session we will focus on logic problems, other arithmetic problems and coordinate geometry."
"In our first session, the student and I reviewed his diagnostic tests before starting the set of practice questions. After working through mostly text-completion, reading comprehension questions, and discussing the strategies represented therein, we turned to the arithmetic problems in the GRE review book. The student didn't really have any trouble with the verbal questions and was receptive to some of the strategies we talked about. With arithmetic, the student had no real trouble. We were able to discuss prime factorizations and a few tricks for approaching such problems. I asked the student to work on the rest of the arithmetic problems, attempt the algebra section of that review on his own, and finish the set of verbal practice questions that we started. We'll meet on Friday morning."
"We reviewed the fraction problems she did from the online set of problems. With some direct assistance, she was able to do these problems relatively well, though I do need to get her to be a bit more confident and independent."
