Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I helped her organize and write her character analysis essay based on the work we had done before. Didn't really see the student struggling with anything, she was writing the essay well, just using me to bounce ideas off of. Next she's going to come up with some persuasive essay topics she wants to write about and gather information on it."
"Revised the student's English paper. Discussed what constitutes a well-written paper. Rewrote his introduction to sound more professional, as well as the first sentence of each paragraph. He will be finishing the rest of the body of his paper and writing the conclusion tonight. The paper will be turned in tomorrow."
"The student had the final draft of his first paper due tomorrow. We concentrated on thematic and narrative continuity. H can come up with good ideas, so I helped him on organizing his thoughts into a cohesive and interesting paper."
"Today was spent working on Algebra and English for the student. The first part of the session focused on helping the student complete assigned Algebra problems from his class. The inequality problems in the assignment gave the student an opportunity to develop his skills. The second portion of the session was spent working on preparing the student for a make-up vocabulary quiz. We worked on reviewing assigned vocabulary words including synonyms and antonyms. The student and the parent did not note any concerns at this time. The next session is scheduled for Sunday."
"On Wednesday with the student we made some edits to her English paper, after her peer editing today in class. We also found an article online for her Human/Animal Interactions class, and wrote a short summary on it. We also went onto the Internet for her Media class, and made some edits and contributions to her group project prompt."
"The student and I started by reviewing her homework assignment from last time. Her writing assignment was significantly improved from the previous assignments - she wrote in significantly more detail, her word choice was varied and far more advanced, and overall, she really took her time thinking about her writing rather than simply getting to the point. I was very pleased with the improvement and expressed my happiness to her and her mother several times. We quickly reviewed how she annotated the poetry assignment she continued from last time and she said that she understood the passage far better after reviewing the poem in this manner and looking up words she did not understand. I told her I would review her corrected answers at home. We spent the majority of the session going over essay structure, including topic/thesis sentences, introductory paragraph styles, and how to support each topic with more than just quotes. We went over the importance of an outline and two outlining styles - list or index card. At the end of the session, we started going over an outline for a prompt she chose and I asked her to continue and flesh out the outline for homework. If her schoolwork allowed, I also wanted her to continue her running writing assignment, but I made that secondary to the outline. She expects to have a writing assignment assigned by school by next session, so we plan on reviewing it, outlining it, and going over reading comprehension (per her mother's request)."
