Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered how to read & write variable expressions. This skill helps tremendously with story problems. We worked on definitions to solve equations. We started solving equations using addition or subtraction. We will finish this lesson next & move on to solving equations using multiplication and division."
"We summarized chapters 11-13 and answered comprehension questions for each. The student will begin reading chapter 14 before we meet tomorrow. He will be prepared to summarize what he's read. A strategy that works for helping him to summarize is to read the first sentences of every paragraph in the chapter."
"We worked on points on the imaginary plane using both rectangular and polar coordinates. We worked on switching from polar to rectangular and vice versa. We also practiced multiplying, dividing, and using exponents for points on the imaginary plane."
"The student had some world culture homework involving labeling the countries of Europe and Africa and listing the capitals. We went over that together. She then mentioned she was having some difficulty understanding combination and permutation, so we went over the section of the book and reviewed practice problems. After that, we went over practice math problems for some extra practice."
"This week we went over her first diagnostic. She did very well!! We went through the points that she had missed and why she got them wrong. I encouraged her to read ahead on the math sections as we will be covering that next. I would like for her to complete 1-2 practice exams and have them scored so that way we can focus on her weak points."
"Today the student and I reviewed absolute value, piecewise, quadratic, cubic, rational, and square root functions in preparation for tomorrow's test. She appears to have a good understanding of the functions and their translations. I also quizzed her on new anions and their oxidation numbers."
"The student and I focused on verbal practice today: learning vocabulary and its nuances, finding words to fit tone and context, and decoding new words. We also practiced math: converting fractions to decimals, using diagrams and pictures to solve word problems, and working with rations/proportions."
"In this session, the student and I reviewed for her test on Monday. We talked about rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, and trapezoids. We worked through problems that involved finding angles and lengths of sides of these figures. We also discussed internal and external angles of all regular polygons."
"The student and I had our first session today. We read a chapter in his book called 'Cocoa', writing questions and comments on post-it notes as we read. He did very well during this session, stopping to ask questions or make comments. I look forward to working with him this Spring."
"The student and I went over her background along with application history. We established her goal score and discussed her strengths and weaknesses. We went over verbal strategies and did practice on all of those strategies. She also did a full passage with questions in verbal to practice using the new strategies. I assigned biology chapter 1 and physics chapter 1 for homework to be done before our next session on Friday."
"The student and I continued studying for the MCAT. She took another practice test, which we went through problem by problem. We then did several "high yield" problems in physics covering a wide range of topics."
"The student completed a practice arguments section. We reviewed it and then worked through questions from a new section under timed conditions. We emphasized the importance of distinguishing necessary and sufficient conditions and understanding the passage before reaching the answer choices."
