Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we focused on vocabulary and reading strategies. We are working on reading problems and passages carefully, while looking at the entire passage. We discussed this and practiced finding details in a story. In math, we finished finding area of irregular shapes and discussed what we feel needs to be reviewed based on her notes, confidence levels, and practice test. We identified percentage word problems, fractions and decimals, and operations with integers as the skills that still need practice. For homework, I assigned her a synonyms quiz."
"The student and I went over the questions he got wrong on a math section and a verbal section. He only got three wrong on the math, so I am not worried about his performance in that area. He did well with the verbal too, getting less than 10 wrong. Ideally his work on roots, suffixes, and prefixes will help that. We started going over a reading section together. He did well when he didn't use his own thoughts/ideas to answer the questions. I really made clear to him the importance of making sure the answer is in the passage, if not word for word than a very close paraphrase. I asked him to finish the reading section, as well as the other math section and another verbal section for our next session in January."
"Today we started by going over fraction to solidify what we had gone over earlier in the week. We hadn't talked about dividing fractions, so we used that as the way to talk about the aspects we wanted to practice. This included reducing, multiplying and turning mixed numbers into improper fractions. These are all related to the operation we were trying to do, so it was a perfect way to practice what we had done. The student needed a lot of reassurance to start, but she ended doing everything independently by the end of the first hour and a half. At her request, we spent the rest of our time practicing with sets. We went over the concept of what a set is, and what we do with them. We used the flashcards as our starting point to talk about intersection, union, subsets, the empty set, and patterns. She grasped onto these concepts with ease and worked through the problems really well."
