Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed verb conjugations in the present and preterite. The student is doing well, so we reviewed a lot. We also reviewed vocab. I could tell that she had studied it and knew most of them well. She also worked on making sentences and that went pretty well. We will continue to review vocab and verb conjugations and will practice some more sentences for next time."
"The session went rather well. We did not concentrate on verbs, but looked at the different rules on definite articles and nouns. We talked about rules on how to distinguish if a noun is masculine or feminine. More importantly, we spent quite a lot of time on irregular nouns: nouns that look masculine but are feminine and vice-versa, nouns which end in -ma which are masculine and words which end in -ma which are feminine, feminine nouns which begin with a stress 'a' (el agua/ el aguila/ las aguas/ las aguilas) vs. feminine nouns which begin with unstressed 'a' (la alfombra), and lastly, nouns whose meanings change depending on whether they are accompanied by a masculine vs. a feminine article (el/la coma, el/la pez, el/la comet) We discussed buying an excellent Spanish book and about the different flashcards which I have created on irregular verbs which are pivotal to memorize. For homework, she has been directed to memorize the preterite of at least the first ten flashcards of irregular verbs. She has also been directed to study all of the different uses of the personal 'a' in Spanish."
"Today was the first tutoring session with the student. We reviewed the imperfect vs. the preterit tenses. She worked on some practice questions, first from her homework assignments, and then from an online language learning program. Then she worked on a one page essay based on a 5 minute video. We watched the video and discussed it, and then we discussed grammatical errors in her essay. This was the first session, so I will look forward to seeing her grades next week to track progress."
