Tutoring review by Ahmad in Meadows Place, TX
Today the student and I covered volumes of surfaces of revolution using the washer method. Moreover, we covered volumes using cross-sectional area. We also covered population growth and Newton's law of cooling. Both involved differential equations, which we solved through integration. We used the calculator to find an instantaneous slope of an inverse function. We also derived formula of arc length using Pythagorean theorem. The student is serious about learning the material. I lead the student using a step by step approach towards each and every problem, and he is improving in his understanding of the concepts. He is going to do the problems provided by his teacher for extra practice.

The student and I looked at some test corrections for a test he took on projectile motion. He had a little trouble converting from the word problems to mathematical expressions. He also had trouble completing the square. We tried to determine the easiest way to teach the concept when completing the square, and settled on using the following formulae: ax^2 + bx + c = a(x-h)^2 + k, where h = -b/2a, and k = c- (b^2)/4a . We will continue to discuss why these formulas work, but I think the student benefits from first being able to complete the problem before getting into the details of why it works. I noticed also that he has some trouble with the calculator that he uses in class. I will give him a quick tutorial on the ti-89 when we start our next session on Thursday.

Tutoring review by Jon in Meadows Place, TX
The student continued to prepare for her geometry final examination during this session. We focused primarily on relationships involving triangles including similarity, trigonometric ratios, the Pythagorean theorem, and altitudes. She was skilled with solving problems involving trigonometry and inequalities within triangles. She initially struggled with concepts involving similarity and altitudes, but showed improvement by the end of the session. For her final exam, she should focus on the properties of parallelograms, triangle similarity, special right triangles, and solving proportions.

I worked with the student on probability. To begin the lesson, we went over the basic probably calculations: P(A), P(A and B), P(A or B), and P(A l B). I also went through an example of how to create a tree diagram (I used flipping a coin three times as an example). Finally, we ended with creating more tree diagrams and different types of events.
