Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Courtney in Hinsdale, IL
We focused on vocabulary and literary terminology for the student's English and Spanish finals. For English, the teacher provided a list of terms, so we defined and reviewed them in reference to the books she's read this semester. For Spanish, we used flashcards to review, and isolated the words she didn't know for her to review as homework. She also worked on an extra credit project for history.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Alemayehu in Hinsdale, IL
This morning we reviewed some notes that he had regarding psychology. Specifically, a lecture focusing on antipsychotic medications, the receptors and pathways in the brain they affect, and the pros and cons of their numerous side-effects. I reviewed various study techniques with him and tried to emphasize the importance of scope: just because something is mentioned and can be discussed at length, does not necessarily mean that it will be important enough for the instructor to include on the examination. Much of the information we went over today was straightforward. I would rate this session "excellent," since he is actually applying some of the techniques that I have been reviewing with him. To be honest, he is nearly almost there, he just needs a bit of time to practice and develop that self-discipline that will guide him in his journey to become a podiatrist.

The student and I prepared for his Bible exam tomorrow. We reviewed the Gospel of John using matching, multiple choice, short answer, true and false, and essay questions. He seemed to do well on most of the questions. I encouraged him to do as much studying outside our sessions as possible because his other upcoming exams will be particularly voluminous. Tomorrow we will be discussing concepts from his English class, and I will devote some time for math and science reviews.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Bohan in Hinsdale, IL
We covered material from the student's textbook for an upcoming exam. He was struggling with differentiating confusing characters but he is a quick learner. I left him with a list of characters/vocabularies he should work on in his own time. Looking forward to the next session with the student, he is very bright.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Scott in Hinsdale, IL
The student has a very complex school assignment that he wishes to get a good grade for. He shares the project with 3 other students. The assignment is to construct a comprehensive proposal for organizing a colony on the Moon. This is taken from a very detailed assignment sheet, given by what he describes as an apprentice teacher. That might not be the right term, but she's helping the regular instructors as part of her own path for a full teacher's position. I was surprised to learn that the student, for all the advanced subjects and materials he's working on, has had next-to-no formal instruction in elementary English grammar. His father confirms this: the approach is called 'immersion' and whatever its virtues, it clearly leaves its students weak in fundamentals. Although this assignment qualifies as 'fantasy' (science fiction), thought must be given to each topic and problem, and a clear explanation is needed about how it will be handled by the hypothetical colony members. A preliminary appraisal: The student needs to concentrate on specifics, on clarity, and not just use high-sounding phrases that are nebulous and unclear. I went through some of the material he's been writing, suggesting where re-writing could make things clearer. I want him to try to imagine being a reader, new to the material: is it clear, simply stated, with understandable vocabulary? He plans to go through the material with his 3 assigned colleagues and do some revisions before turning in the assignment.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Kristen in Hinsdale, IL
Tonight I worked with the student on a persuasive speech for her Public Speaking class. She was starting from scratch, so we brainstormed ideas and did research, and she drew up an outline and began writing her speech. We are about half way through right now and plan on finishing and practicing it tomorrow evening. She seems to be progressing well.
