Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did our normal vocabulary quiz at the beginning of the session. The student got all but one word correct, and I told him he would get 50 words a week to memorize until he takes the test. He said he noticed that the words he is studying recur on the test and the memorization has helped him. Next, we went over the reading and math sections he did for homework. We talked about the answers he got wrong and how to correct them. Then we went over the essay section in depth. We talked about essay-writing tips, looked at multiple examples of SAT essays that were both good and bad, and went over his diagnostic essay. For homework, he will do the last math practice section and the last writing practice session."
"The student wrote an essay in advance of this session, but he ran out of time, so I gave him an assignment on thesis planning and example selection, for which he is to go through five prompts at five minutes apiece, deciding on a thesis, selecting examples, and writing a quick note for each example on how it develops the thesis. I told him that if he knows his opinion on a subject, he can choose his thesis and find examples supporting it, but if he's not sure, he can pick examples relevant to the topic and arrive at his thesis by examining his thoughts on them. I also looked at a critical reading section and a writing section he'd done. His performance on writing multiple-choice is improving. And as far as critical reading is concerned, he answered all but three questions correctly."
"Today we worked on strategies for solving math and writing problems. The student showed quick improvement. His homework was to write an essay on a prompt I provided, complete practice problems from the prep book, and make a list of all the books he has read."
