"For this session, I wanted to focus on verbal reasoning and reading comprehension. We worked on placement exam-specific vocabulary by creating flash cards for all of the A-words on our list (taken from the current edition of the review prep book). The student was very effective in finding these words in the dictionary. Once the flashcards were complete, we moved on to a discussion about the test, in general, its structure, and how test-taking strategies like pacing, guessing, and the process of elimination could help enhance his overall success and alleviate some of the anxiety and stress associated with taking the exam. These strategies were followed by a series of examples that helped concretize his understanding of the materials. Our reading comprehension section consisted of readings from "Popular Science Magazine" (one of the magazines purchased by his mother for use in our sessions) and "This I Believe II: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women" (one of a few books I brought for the session). The main goal was to have the student read out loud and explain the content of his readings to me. This was accomplished in a dialogue format. He read from Popular Science Magazine (one article on the innovation of Ford and one on "The Printable Car") and I read an essay from This I Believe II ("Creating Our Own Happiness" by Wayne Coyne).
We took a short break and continued our session by having the student take a Lower Level Practice Test on verbal reasoning that focused on synonyms and sentence completion. While he was strong on both accounts, he seemed to really shine in the section on sentence completion.
We concluded our work by going over his flashcards. For homework, he was to continue studying his flashcards, read over the supplied materials (Session 1 and 2 of the curriculum, including the verbal reasoning practice test), and complete the personalized test questions provided through the website.
I feel really good about this student. He's very bright, honest, and willing to do the necessary work to accomplish his goals of passing the placement exam and getting accepted to his choice private school."
