"The student worked on an essay she is writing in which she analyzes a photograph. We read the assignment and model essay, then she brainstormed and wrote a page that both summarizes the photograph and introduces her response to it. She will continue working on the paper on her own. We will also study for her Intro to Islam class in future sessions."
"I met the student and his father, and we discussed their expectations/goals for the coming weeks and months. They both expressed a desire to an imposed "higher standard" that can simulate the environment the student will be entering next year. We laid out a broad outline for practice and instruction, instruction that would cover more complex grammatical concepts, more rigorous structural styles, and a better system for organizing homework time. First, we will work on diagnostics. Next, we will start vocabulary expansion that will include key grammar terms in order to lay the groundwork for later progress. Second, we will work on writing style and organization, with special emphasis on the standard "five paragraph essay." He has some good experience in the area, but we will impose a rubric that demands more. The student spent the latter part of the lesson working on a pending essay."
"For this session, we spent a long time working on run-on sentences and sentence fragments. We worked through a PowerPoint explaining the two, then I had the student do several pages of identifying exercises; he did well, only missing two or three. We talked about finding the subject and the verb, as well as how to edit two sentences together and how to edit a run-on into two sentences. For homework, he will correct the errors in his essay."
